When it comes to protecting yourself and your loved ones from mosquito-borne illness, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure

Montgomery County Mosquito ControlWe all know the old saying, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” You have probably heard it used in many scenarios to solidify the importance of being proactive in preventing a negative occurrence. When it comes to protecting yourself and your family from the threat of mosquito-borne illness this “old” saying certainly rings true…

In the same way you wouldn’t wait until you became sick to purchase health insurance, or hold off until a fender-bender happened before adding automobile insurance coverage, you certainly don’t want to wait until you or a loved one is diagnosed with West Nile Virus or another mosquito-borne illness before you decide to hire a mosquito control professional. Being proactive now and taking measures to control and prevent mosquitoes is the best way to reduce the chances of coming into contact with a mosquito that could transmit an illness onto you or a loved one within your own backyard.

As late summer is the warmest time for most of the country, the potential of mosquito-borne disease transmission increases with the corresponding increase in their numbers. According to CDC Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, As of July 14, 2015, a total of 30 states have reported West Nile virus infections in people, birds, or mosquitoes for 2015. Overall, 17 cases of West Nile virus disease in people have been reported to CDC. Of these, six (35%) were classified as neuroinvasive disease (such as meningitis or encephalitis) and 11 (65%) were classified as non-neuroinvasive disease. During the period of 2001 through 2014, the CDC reported 283 of West Nile Virus in Maryland. Now is the time to remain vigilant with mosquito control and prevention in order to reduce the risk of coming into contact with a potentially infected mosquito.
